Wimbledon courts are surfaced with real grass. The distinctive striped pattern comes naturally from mowing the grass in alternating directions, back and forth along the length of the court. Each blade of grass is squashed in the direction in which it was mowed. When the blade bends away from the viewer, its entire face reflects sunlight, producing a lighter shade of green.
If the mower instead started from the center and spiraled outward like a snail shell, what would the pattern be?
