In the past century, women have made remarkable progress in the workplace despite countless challenges and inequalities. Women have been taking charge and shattering limits. Of course, there is still a long way to go.

Numerous research has shown, as a result of nature and nurture, there is a confidence gap between the genders. Women are generally under-confident about their competencies and therefore less likely to take action; while men are often over-confident and more willing to take risks. There are other interesting observations and conclusions made regarding this gap, you can find more in this article from the Atlantic.

In this article, the authors, Katty Kay and Claire Shipman, talked about a 2003 study by psychologists from Cornell and Washington State University. In this study, groups of male and female students were asked to gauge their competence in scientific skills and were then given the same test. Despite being less confident, the female students performed just as well as the males. The students were then offered the opportunity to participate in a competition for prizes. 4949% of the female students signed up, compared to 7171% of male students.
