When blood pH is too low (acidic), it stimulates the brain and arterial receptors, increases the respiration rate, and decreases blood carbon dioxide and carbonic acid concentration. This increases the blood pH and restores homeostasis. On the other hand, if the blood pH is too high (basic), then the brain and arterial receptors are stimulated. Respiration rate decreases, while blood carbon dioxide and carbonic acid concentrations increase. The blood pH decreases and homeostasis is restored.
