What Is the Founder Effect? — Definition & Examples

You are studying a population of red and blue algae in a pond. The red algae is much less common than the blue algae, but they are of the same species. One day, a gust of wind sprays droplets of water from the pond you are studying all the way over to a different pond that had no algae in it. Within a few days, the pond is covered in red algae. You know that the environment in the two ponds is the same.
What can you say about the population of algae that traveled over to the new pond?
