Biosphere — Definition & Importance

Some artificial biospheres have been made to study ecology. These biospheres are isolated and kept apart from the surrounding environment in order to be more scientifically accurate. An open system exchanges parts like nutrients with other systems, while a closed system does not. Would an artificial biosphere be an open or closed system?
