Construction: Altitude or Perpendicular

Before this, knowConstruction: Perpendicular Bisector

Read · 1 min

The critical part of this construction is that in an isosceles triangle, the vertex (intersection of the two equal sides) lies on the perpendicular bisector of the opposite side.

From a point PP to a line ℓ\ell, draw a circle around PP with your compass that intersects ℓ\ell at QQ and RR. Since PQ=PRPQ=PR, PP lies on the perpendicular bisector of QRQR. Therefore, just construct ℓ′\ell' to be the perpendicular bisector of QRQR, and that is the unique perpendicular line to ℓ\ell from PP.

Note: to construct the perpendicular bisector, draw two circles of equal radius around QQ and RR, intersecting at XX and YY. XYXY is the perpendicular bisector.
