What is a hyperbola ?

Consider 1 point O and 1 line in the cartesian plane l Now we want to find the locus of all points in the plane such that the ratio of the distance of the point from the point O and the line l remains constant . Now whenever the value of this constant is greater than 1 , the curve that we obtain is called a hyperbola

Other definition:

An hyperbola can also be obtained in the follwing method. Consider an infinite double cone (two cones placed such that their axes coincide, their vertices coincide and the 2 cones extend in opposite directions.) Now imagine a plane parallel to the axis of this cone . This plane intersects our double cone in a curve called hyperbola

Here is another way of picturing a hyperbola

Take 2 points on a sheet of paper , say A and B. Try to draw as many points P as you can satisfying PA - PB = constant The locii of all such points is a hyperbola
