SOH-CAH-TOA
We are going to use the trigonometric functions of sine, cosine, and tangent only with right triangles (triangles that contain a angle).
These functions will allow us to figure out the lengths of a triangle's sides.

Recall that the hypotenuse is the side of the triangle across from the right angle.
NOTE: we are going to be using calculators for these types of problems. Since we've got our angles written in degrees (), MAKE SURE YOUR CALCULATOR IS IN THE DEGREES MODE, NOT RADIANS.

In order to help remember which equation is which, many people use the abbreviation SOH-CAH-TOA.
SOH: Sine of the angle equals Opposite side length divided by Hypotenuse
CAH: Cosine of the angle equals Adjacent side length divided by Hypotenuse
TOA: Tangent of the angle equals Opposite side length divided by Adjacent side length
In the set of equations above, represents the measurement of the angle. Let's look at an example to see how to use them.

What is the length of the hypotenuse of this triangle?
Since this is a right triangle, what is the measure of the angle that's not yet labeled?
Let's say that I want to figure out the length of the side of the triangle opposite the angle. This is where we can use trigonometry.

If we want to know the length of the side opposite the angle, and we already know the length of the hypotenuse, which trig function should we use?
Now, grab a calculator and solve for . What is the length of the side ?

Let's use cosine to find the length of y. Recall that:
We already know that the hypotenuse is . What is the length of the side adjacent to the angle?
Use cosine to solve for the length of this adjacent side, :
What is the length of side ?

Our final triangle!
