How do glasses work?

Glasses people wear for conditions like nearsightedness and farsightedness contain corrective lenses.

What does a corrective lens do?

-refracts and focuses light

-creates virtual images --> brings rays to a place that eye can focus

Three panels of an eye. (a) A relaxed eye focuses an object at the far point onto the retina. (b) Parallel rays from a distant tree pass a diverging lens, forming a virtual image at the far point. (c) The eye focuses on that nearby virtual image.

Explanation of process of how a lens helps the eye focus an image

Three eye diagrams: a normal eye focusing on the retina, an eye with a convex lens in front, and an eye with a concave lens in front, with corrected and uncorrected focus labeled.

The blue rays indicate corrected focus and red rays show uncorrected focus. The concave lens is used to help people with myopia (nearsighted) while the convex lens is used to help people with hyperopia (farsighted).
