Limitations on Cell Growth

Cells require many components to survive such as nutrients, solutes, water, etc. Furthermore, these components are constantly being exchanged through the cell's membrane, and this exchange is limited by the cell's surface area.

As a cell grows, its volume increases at a faster rate than its surface area. Therefore, the volume of a cell is limited by its surface area, which is directly related to its ability to permeate required materials through its membrane.

Limitations on Cell Growth

Surface area limits the diffusion of nutrients into the cell. The smaller the cell the higher the surface area to volume ratio.
