Overview of Calcium Storage and Release

Calcium ions are important for cellular signaling. To maintain the Ca2+Ca^{2+} concentration in the cytoplasm, calcium ions are pumped from the cytosol to the extracellular space and into the endoplasmic reticulum and sometimes into the mitochondria. Cell signaling occurs when the cell is stimulated to release calcium from intracellular stores.
