Overview of Electron Transport Chains

Electron transport chains (ETC) are embedded in the mitochondria and transport electrons and protons across membranes. This transferring creates a gradient that contributes to ATP synthesis.

The video and image below further describe the series of compounds and components that make up electron transport chains.

Electron transport chain in the inner mitochondrial membrane: NADH and FADH2 pass electrons through complexes I, II, Q, III, cytochrome c and IV; H+ is pumped into the intermembrane space; O2 is reduced to H2O.
