Protein Degradation: Proteasomes

A proteasome is a large protein complex in the nucleus that degrades, or chemically breaks down, proteins.

The structure of a proteasome includes a cylindrical core particle surrounded by two regulatory cap complexes. The cap complexes act as a gate or passageway into the core complex, which contains the regulatory particle and proteolytic sites.
