As a quick review, a harmonic oscillator is a system that, when displaced from equilibrium, experiences a restoring force proportional to the displacement.

Written algebraically, F⃗=−kx⃗\vec{F}=-k\vec{x} where F⃗\vec{F} is the force vector, x⃗\vec{x} is the displacement vector, and kk is a positive constant.

Suppose that we have a harmonic oscillator, and attached to this oscillator is a mass mm.

How can we use the above to understand the object's motion?

Another Way of Solving the Simple Harmonic Oscillator

The Simple Harmonic Oscillator System can also be solved by using separation of variables, instead of complex numbers. The differential equation we are trying to solve here is d2xdt2=−ω2x\frac{\mathrm{d}^2x}{\mathrm{d}t^2} = -\omega^2 x

We note that we can write d2xdt2=vdvdx\frac{\mathrm{d}^2x}{\mathrm{d}t^2} = v \frac{\mathrm{d}v}{\mathrm{d}x} since dxdt\frac{\mathrm{d}x}{\mathrm{d}t} and we thus obtain:

∫vdv=∫−ω2xdx\int v \mathrm{d}v = \int -\omega^2 x \mathrm{d}x

We can later write v=dxdtv = \frac{\mathrm{d}x}{\mathrm{d}t} and it is left as an exercise to the reader that the same answer is obtained for the equation of motion of a simple harmonic oscillator as the one obtained when complex numbers is used to solve the differential equation.
