Structure of Mitochondria

The mitochondria is bound by an outer membrane which serves as a barrier. The inner sac is called the matrix and is bound by the inner membrane. Within the inner membrane reside ribosomes and DNA. The image below further explains the components of the mitochondria.

Mitochondrion cutaway labeled with outer membrane, intermembrane space, inner membrane folded into cristae, and matrix with ribosomes and DNA; an inset enlarges the F0 and F1 portions of ATP synthase.
