The volume of a cylinder is very similar to other types of volumes.

To find the volume of a three-dimensional shape, you find the cross section and multiply by the height.

The cross section of a cylinder is a circle. From this we can now look for a formula. We know that the base section is a circle, and the area of a circle is A=πr2A = \pi r^2. To find the literal equation/formula for the volume of a cylinder, we just multiply the area of its circular base by its height h:h:

V=A×h=πr2hV=A \times h= \pi r^2 h, so V=πr2hV=\pi r^2 h, for radius rr and height hh.
