Factors

Factors, also known as divisors, are whole numbers that can be multiplied together to produce another whole number.

Rules about Factors

  1. Every integer is a factor of itself
  2. 11 is a factor of any integer
  3. Every factor of an integer is less than or equal to the number itself
  4. All integers above 11 has at least 22 factors: 11 and the number itself.

Factor pairs are 22 factors that will equal to the number itself when multiplied.

The factors of a prime number is 11 and the number itself, as prime numbers will only have 22 multiplies.

Let’s take a look at an example.

What are the factors of 1212?

To find the factors of 1212, we first need to think: Which 22 numbers, when multiplied together, would equal 1212?

Using our rules about factors, we know that all integers above 11 has at least 22 factors: 11 and the number itself. So, a factor pair of 1212 is 11 and 1212.

Next, we can try the number 22. 22 and 66 can be multiplied together to get the number 1212. Thus, 22 and 66 are factors of 1212.

Next, try the number 33. 33 and 44 can be multiplied together to get the number 1212. Therefore, 33 and 44 are also factors of 1212.

In conclusion, the factors of 1212 are 1,2,3,4,6,121, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12.

Now, let's try a couple of problems.

Divisors

A divisor is an integer that divides into another integer without a remainder. The positive divisors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.

Let's look at the above example a little more closely.

The divisors of 1212 ((also called factors of 12)12) are integers that divide into 1212 without a remainder. ((That means that numbers like 55 are not divisors of 12,12, since 12÷5=212 \div 5 = 2 remainder 2.)2.) 12÷1=12, so 1 is a divisor of 1212÷2=6, so 2 is a divisor of 1212÷3=4, so 3 is a divisor of 1212÷4=3, so 4 is a divisor of 1212÷6=2, so 6 is a divisor of 1212÷12=1, so 12 is a divisor of 12\begin{align} 12 \div 1 &= 12, \text{ so $1$ is a divisor of $12$}\\ 12 \div 2 &= 6, \text{ so $2$ is a divisor of $12$}\\ 12 \div 3 &= 4, \text{ so $3$ is a divisor of $12$}\\ 12 \div 4 &= 3, \text{ so $4$ is a divisor of $12$}\\ 12 \div 6 &= 2, \text{ so $6$ is a divisor of $12$}\\ 12 \div 12 &= 1, \text{ so $12$ is a divisor of $12$}\\ \end{align}

−1,−2,−3,−4,−6,-1, -2, -3, -4, -6, and −12-12 are also divisors of 12.12. However, usually you will be dealing with positive divisors.

(Video) Factoring

by Math Antics

This video by mathantics explains the definition of a factor and how to find them.

Summary\large{\text{Summary}}

Factoring is like being given the answer to a multiplication problem. The goal is to figure out what that multiplication problem was. We can think of factoring as unmultiplying. We take one number and find what two numbers we can multiply together to make it.

Suppose we want to factor the number 1010. We can look at this as asking, what two numbers multiply together to make 1010?

Well 2×52\times5 equals 1010. So we say that 22 and 55 are factors of 1010.

But wait, there's still some more. If we multiply 1×101\times10 this also equals 1010. So 11 and 1010 are factors of 1010.

This leads us to an important rule. A whole number always has at least two factors: 11 and itself.

Divisors

Factors are also known as divisors. This means they can divide evenly into the number they're a factor of. In other words, when you divide by them, they don't leave a remainder.

For example, 44 is a factor of the number 3636. If we divide 44 into 3636, we get 99 and no remainder. This also means that 99 is a factor of 3636.

If we divide 55 into 3636, we get 77 with a remainder of 11. Therefore, 55 is not a factor.
