What Are Geometric Transformations?

Illustrated · 1 min

A transformation is a movement of some sort. Four basic transformations are:

a) Translation

A translation is the direct movement of a selected area, or a slide.

b) Rotation

Rotation is exactly what its name says, a rotation, or a turn. However, you can rotate across any point you choose.

c) Reflection

A reflection maps the picture on the left of the axis to the right. The axis can also be the axis of symmetry in a symmetrical shape.

d) Dilation/Homothety

A dilation, also known as homothety, is a re-sizing of a picture by a scale factor x. 2 scale factor would make the picture twice as big, 1/2 as a scale factor would make the picture half sized.

Type a concept, like “slope” or “photosynthesis”.
