What Is Congruence Modulo N?

Read · 1 min

Definition

Two integers, aa and bb, are congruent modulo nn if and only if they have the same remainder when divided by nn

In other words, for some integer kk (positive or negative):

a=b+kna=b+kn

or

a−b=kna-b=kn

When two numbers are congruent modulo nn, it is denoted by:

a≡b(modn)a \equiv b \pmod n

Manipulations in congreuence modulo nn

**A1: ** Given that a≡b(modn)a\equiv b \pmod n, then a+c≡b+c(modn)a+c\equiv b+c \pmod n

A2 Given that a≡b(modn)a\equiv b \pmod n and c≡d(modn)c\equiv d \pmod n, then a+c≡b+d(modn)a+c\equiv b+d \pmod n

**M1: ** Given that a≡b(modn)a\equiv b \pmod n, then ac≡bc(modn)ac\equiv bc \pmod n

**M2: ** Given that a≡b(modn)a\equiv b \pmod n and c≡d(modn)c\equiv d \pmod n, then ac≡bd(modn)ac\equiv bd \pmod n

**M3: ** Given that a≡b(modn)a\equiv b \pmod n, then ac≡bc(modn)a^c\equiv b^c \pmod n

Preparing for a math contest?

Working through past problems on one idea at a time is one of the most effective ways to prepare. These are real problems from the AMC 8, AMC 10, AMC 12 and AIME, the national math competitions for middle and high school students, each with a worked solution on LIVE by Po-Shen Loh.

This explanation is going to be quite long because it is going to explain the modulus function. Skip through this next part if you like!

There is an equivalence relation called the "modulo nn" equivalence relation that is written like this: a≡bmodc.a \equiv b \hspace{1mm}mod \hspace{1mm}c . a and b are said to be equivalent modulo c if and only if (a−b)c\frac{\left(a-b\right)}{c} is an integer. It should be obvious that a≡amodca \equiv a \hspace{1mm}mod \hspace{1mm}c for any and all integers a and c.

True or false: 3≡18mod4.3 \equiv 18 \hspace{1mm}mod \hspace{1mm}4.

This is a great introduction to modular arithmetic.
