Epigenetics is the study of genetic effects not encoded within DNA.
Commonly, environmental factors cause certain genes to be turned on and off, which means that although the DNA sequence is not changed, that gene may remain on/off through generations of cell divisions. Additionally, DNA methylation, histone modification, or any form of gene repression can be passed on to future generations of cells.
