Define Z[n]\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{n}] to be the set {a+bn:a,b∈Z}\{a+b\sqrt{n}:a,b\in\mathbb{Z}\}.

Consider α=a+bn∈Z[n]\alpha=a+b\sqrt{n}\in\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{n}]. We define the conjugate of α\alpha to be α‾:=a−bn\overline{\alpha}:=a-b\sqrt{n}. Then, we naturally define the norm as N(α)=αα‾=a2−nb2N(\alpha)=\alpha\overline\alpha=a^2-nb^2.

Note that if n=−1n=-1, we have N(α)=a2+b2N(\alpha)=a^2+b^2, which is ∣α∣2|\alpha|^2.

The way we defined norms makes it easy to check that the norm is multiplicative. N(αβ)=αβαβ‾=αα‾ββ‾=N(α)N(β).N(\alpha\beta) = \alpha\beta\overline{\alpha\beta} = \alpha\overline{\alpha}\beta\overline\beta = N(\alpha)N(\beta).

Let's try some examples:

What is the norm of 1+3i∈Z[i]1+3i\in\mathbb{Z}[i]?
