When you're flying, what does it mean to be "distance xx above the ground" or "at an altitude of xx"?

Well first, say the Earth is approximately a sphere of radius rr, with center OO. Then if you're at a point PP in space, that means you're distance OPOP away from the center of the sphere, so you're distance PA=OP−OA=OP−rPA = OP - OA = OP - r above the ground, where AA is the closest point to PP on "Earth" (the sphere).

Type a concept, like “slope” or “photosynthesis”.
