The average value of a function is the average height of the graph of a function.

The horizontal line f ave is the average value of this function.

The average value of a function f(x) over the interval [a,b] is given by the formula fave=1b−a∫abf(x)dxf _{ave}= \frac{1}{b-a}{\int}^b_a{f(x)dx}

What is the average value of the function f(x)=x2f(x) = x^{2} on the interval [0,2]?

The average value of a function over a particular interval can be found with an expression involving an integral. Obviously you must know the algebraic function, f(x)f(x). Also, the interval will be known. Let's say that interval is [a,b][a, b]. Then the average value of f(x)f(x) over said interval is

1b−a∫abf(x)dx\frac{1}{b - a}{\int}^b_a{f(x)dx}

Here is an example to demonstrate how this works.

What is the average value of the function f(x)=2cos⁡(2x)f(x) = 2\cos(2x) on the interval [0,π][0,\pi]?

In the above formula, f(x)=2cos⁡(2x)f(x) = 2\cos(2x), a=0a = 0, and b=πb = \pi, so the average value is

1π−0∫0π2cos⁡(2x)dx=1π[sin⁡(2x)]0π=1π[sin⁡(2π)−sin⁡(0)]=1π[0−0]=0.\begin {align*} \frac{1}{\pi - 0}{\int}^{\pi}_{0}{2\cos(2x)dx} &= \frac{1}{\pi}{[\sin(2x)]}^{\pi}_{0} \\&= \frac{1}{\pi}[\sin(2\pi) - \sin(0)] = \frac{1}{\pi}[0 - 0] \\&= 0. \end {align*}

Say we want to find the average value of the function f(x)=1+x2f(x) = 1 + x^2 on the interval [−1,2].[-1,2].

f(x) = 1+x^2 on [-1,2]

The average value of a function, or the average height of a function, is the height of the rectangle that has area equivalent to the area under the curve of the function. It is defined generally by the equation

1(b−a)∫abf(x)dx\frac{1}{(b-a)}\int_a^{b}f(x)dx

Now we replace f(x)f(x) with our function from the above graph and get

1(b−a)∫ab(1+x2)dx\frac{1}{(b-a)}\int_a^{b}(1+x^2)dx

Then we switch the endpoints and get

1(b−a)∫−12(1+x2)dx\frac{1}{(b-a)}\int_{-1}^{2}(1+x^2)dx

And finally, in the equation before the integrand we replace (b−a)(b-a) with the given values of bb and aa

1(2−(−1))∫−12(1+x2)dx\frac{1}{(2-(-1))}\int_{-1}^{2}(1+x^2)dx = 13∫−12(1+x2)dx\frac{1}{3}\int_{-1}^{2}(1+x^2)dx

Find the average value of f(x)=4x−x2f(x) = 4x - x^2 on [0,4].[0,4].

An integral is the area under a curve. A definite integral is the area under a curve from one point to another along the x-axis. There is a specific point on the y-axis where if you multiply the x-value and the y-value, you get the exact value of the area. Average Value of a function is how to solve for that y-value.

We know how to find the area under a curve through the anti-derivative method: ∫03x2dx\int_0^3 x^2 dx

We take the anti-derivative of x2x^2 and get (x3)/3(x^3)/3.

Then we plug 00 and 33 in for xx and subtract 00 from 99, which equals 99. We can find the average value if we take our final answer (in this case, 99) and multiply it by 1/(b−a)1/(b-a). bb is the upper limit of integration and aa is the lower limit of integration. In this case, aa is 00 and bb is 99 so 1/3(9)=9/3=31/3(9)=9/3=3. The average value of this function is 33.

What is the average value of the function ∫02x2dx\int_0^2 x^2 dx?
