Direct Proportion

Two variables xx and yy are directly proportional if y=kxy=kx. Or, in words, as xx increases, yy increases as well. This is the directly proportional relationship for k=1k=1:

As x→∞x\rightarrow\infty, y→∞y\rightarrow\infty and as x→−∞x\rightarrow-\infty, y→−∞y\rightarrow-\infty.

(Video) Direct and Inverse Proportion

by HEGARTYMATHS

In this video, HEGARTYMATHS goes over the basics of solving problems involving direct proportionality.

If yy is directly proportional to xx we write

y=kxy=kx

In this equation, kk is some constant that links yy and xx. When solving proportion problems, the first step is to usually solve for kk. Once you have that, you can solve for any xx or yy value if you are given the other.

Test Yourself

yy is directly proportional to xx.

If y=320y=320 when x=80x=80 find xx when y=100y=100.
