Connecting the Dots

Remember that a standard form equation appears as: Ax+By=C,Ax + By = C, where AA, BB, and CC aren't fractions, AA is positive, and xx and yy are variables.

Standard form does not give as much information about a graph as slope intercept form or point slope form, but it does make it fairly easy to find the xx- and yy-intercepts.

To draw a linear graph using standard form, follow the following steps:

  1. Find the xx-intercept by setting yy to 00.
  2. Find the yy-intercept by setting xx to 00.
  3. Connect the dots.

Step 1: Find the xx-intercept

Let's look at the equation: 2x+3y=62x + 3y = 6 In order to easily graph this, we first need to find the xx-intercept. To do that, we find xx when y=0y=0.

In the equation 2x+3y=62x + 3y = 6, what is xx when y=0y = 0?

(Video) Graphing Linear Functions by Finding the xx- and yy-Intercepts

by PatrickJMT

This video by Patrick JMT explains how to draw a graph of an equation in standard form using the xx- and yy-intercepts.

Summary\large{\text{Summary}}

Intercepts

An intercept is the point where the graph crosses an axis. So the xx-intercept is the point where the graph crosses the xx-axis and the yy-intercept is the point where the graph crosses the yy-axis.

If we look at a graph, we see that any xx-intercept will have a yy coordinate of 00. Similarly, any yy-intercept will have an xx coordinate of 00.

x-Intercepts at (a,0) and y-intercept at (0,b).

Made using Desmos

Using the standard form of an equation we can easily find the intercepts.

  • To find the xx-intercept, we set y=0y=0 and solve for xx.
  • To find the yy-intercept, we set x=0x=0 and solve for yy.

Then, because two points define a line, we can graph our equation by drawing a line through these intercepts!

Example

Plot the intercepts of 2x+4y=122x+4y=12 and use them to graph the equation.

Starting with finding the xx-intercept, we set y=0y=0 and solve for xx. 2x+4y=122x+4(0)=122x=122x2=122x=6\begin{align} 2x+4y&=12\\ 2x+4({\color{#8925ae}{0}})&=12\\ 2x&=12\\ \frac{2x}{\color{#8925ae}{2}}&=\frac{12}{\color{#8925ae}{2}}\\ x&=6 \end{align} Our xx-intercept is (6,0)(6,0).

For the yy-intercept, we set x=0x=0 and solve for yy. 2x+4y=122(0)+4y=124y=124y4=124y=3\begin{align} 2x+4y&=12\\ 2({\color{#8925ae}{0}})+4y&=12\\ 4y&=12\\ \frac{4y}{\color{#8925ae}{4}}&=\frac{12}{\color{#8925ae}{4}}\\ y&=3 \end{align} Our yy-intercept is (0,3)(0,3).

Finally, we can plot these points, and draw the line that goes through them. This will be the graph of our equation!

Graph of 2x + 4y = 12.
