As you may have guessed, the Second Law of Thermodynamics states that the entropy, or disorder, of the universe is increasing. We can take several examples in daily life to see why this is the case.

For example, imagine you have a standard deck of 52 playing cards and you scatter them onto the floor or a table. You then pick them up randomly, one by one, and stack the cards again. There are 52!≈8.07×106752! \approx 8.07 \times 10^67 possible arrangements for the cards. However, only one of these possible orders is the same as the original order of the cards. As a result, the probability of order in this system is extremely slim, which is why the universe proceeds to disorder.

Similarly, imagine you have two bulbs, one of which is empty. The other one contains four molecules of gas. After the gas is allowed to move around, there are three possible final arrangements: one in which there are still four molecules in one bulb and none in the other; one in which there are three molecules in one bulb and one in the other; and one in which there are two molecules in each bulb. For the first arrangement, we are effectively choosing 0 molecules to move into the other bulb, so there are (40)=1\binom{4}{0} = 1 possible ways to do this. Similarly, for the second arrangement, there are (41)=4\binom{4}{1} = 4 possible arrangements. However, for the last arrangement, there are (42)=6\binom{4}{2} = 6 possible arrangements, the greatest of the three. As a result, this is the most likely arrangement, so the universe proceeds to this state, and the disorder of the universe increases.

The second law of thermodynamics states that the universe tends toward disorder. This idea may seem hard to understand, so make sure to check out this video to see some examples.
