It turns out that the dot product is equal to the product of the magnitudes of the vectors times the cosine of the angle between the vectors (a⃗⋅b⃗=∣∣a⃗∣∣⋅∣∣b⃗∣∣cos⁡α\vec{a}\cdot\vec{b}=||\vec{a}||\cdot||\vec{b}||\cos\alpha). Therefore, we can easily figure out whether or not two lines or planes or etc. are perpendicular by computing the dot product.

Are the vectors ⟨1,2,0⟩\langle1, 2, 0\rangle and ⟨−1,0,4⟩\langle-1, 0, 4\rangle perpendicular?

Mathematicians have a nasty habit of asking questions by stringing together words and hoping they can somehow be interpreted. So it was with the dot product. The dot product was invented when mathematicians first asked "What do I get when I multiply two vectors?" As it turned out this question is impossible to answer.

The Standard Definition

That's not because this is the most impossible problem in the world. Rather, the question turns out to have so many answers. "Multiplication" in terms of vectors is ambiguous. However, only two products are really important right nowt: the dot product and the cross product. Josiah Willard Gibbs, of Gibbs free energy fame soon gave these products symbols: "⋅\cdot" for the dot product, and "×\times" for the cross product. We still use these.

The dot product came about because mathematicians wanted something similar to scalar multiplication. For example, the dot product should satisfy commutativity, linearity, etc. It turned out that there was only one formula that worked, made logical sense, and appeared naturally.

The original definition of the dot product of two vectors, u⃗=⟨a1,a2,…,an⟩\vec{\textbf{u}} = \langle a_1, a_2, \dots, a_n \rangle and v⃗=⟨b1,b2,…,bn⟩\vec{\textbf{v}} = \langle b_1, b_2, \dots, b_n \rangle is: u⃗⋅v⃗=a1b1+a2b2+⋯+anbn\vec{\textbf{u}} \cdot \vec{\textbf{v}} = a_1b_1+a_2b_2+ \dots + a_nb_n (From now on, vectors will just be bolded letters)

Note that this is a scalar! Now find the dot product of the vectors ⟨0,1,−3,1⟩\langle 0, 1, -3, 1 \rangle and ⟨5,7,0,3⟩\langle 5, 7, 0, 3 \rangle

Vector Dot Product

The vector dot product allows us to multiply two vector quantities together, giving us a scalar quantity (or scalar product).

There are two ways that we can find the vector dot product. Having two formulas can be helpful depending on what information you have.

Type a concept, like “slope” or “photosynthesis”.
