Adição de numeros positivos

Just add!

Natural numbers (1,2,3,4,1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) are the numbers you see most often. They don't have any fractions or decimals attached to them, and they exist above or to the right of 00 on the number line.

A number line where the numbers above 0 are highlighted. These are the positive numbers.

Natural numbers are above zero on the number line.

When you add natural numbers, you just move up (or to the right) on the number line. For example, when you add 4+54 + 5 you can start at 44:

The number line. There's a dot on 4.

Then, count up 55 points. You can think of "++" as sending a number to the right.

The number line. The dot was moved from 4 to 9.

Done! Adding 55 means we stepped 55 places up the number line, so 4+5=94 + 5 = 9.

Count backwards

Subtracting a positive number from a positive number works the same way as adding a negative number to a positive number. It might help to conceptualize it a little differently, though. Let's work with the expression 6−26 - 2.

First, let's find all our numbers on the number line.

A number line from -11 to 11. A dot is on 2 and a dot is on 6.

We're working with 2 and 6

Since we're subtracting 22 from 66, we're going want to use 66 as our new anchor point and figure out 22's position from it. So, let's find 22's position relative to 00.

The same number line. Two spaces are moved to get from 0 to 2.

Now, we're subtracting 22. Subtracting a number is pretty much the same as adding the negative version of the same number, so we could rewrite our expression as 6+(−2)6 + (-2). To find this, we can just flip 22's position relative to 00:

Two spaces are moved backwards from 0 to get to -2.

Now, let's just transpose −2-2 to the same relative position to 66 as it is to 00 now.

If you move backwards two spaces from 6 you get to 4.

As you can see from the image, you can also count backwards on the number line to find the answer.

Now we can see that 6−2=46 - 2 = 4. When you subtract a number, you basically change it's sign (so positive numbers become negative, and negative numbers become positive) and then add it like you would otherwise.

Subtracting Positives or Zero

Subtracting a positive integer is essentially the same as adding a negative integer.

When you subtract positive integers, you are moving down (or to the left) on the number line.

For example, let’s take a look at the expression 9−29-2.

First, let’s draw a number line and start at 99.

9 on the number line

Made using Desmos

We now have to subtract 22 from 99.

Count down 22 points starting from 99.

9-7=7

Now, try this problem.

Solve 10−510-5.

(Video) Adding and Subtracting Integers

by Math Antics

This video by Math Antics goes over all the different ways to add and subtract integers. It covers adding and subtracting whole numbers, subtracting a positive from a negative, adding negatives or zero, negative plus positive, subtracting negatives or zero, and subtracting a negative from a positive.

Summary\large{\text{Summary}}

Adding positive numbers falls under the first case shown in the video. We are taking a positive number and making it more positive. 7+37+3 We are starting at 77 and making it more positive by 33 units. We are going to move 33 units to the right on the number line up to 1010.
