Here's a video by mathman1024 that explains equivalent fractions.
Summary
Equivalent fractions are fractions with different denominators that have the same meaning.
Let's look at a picture to understand this.
Here we have a representation of the fraction 21. But watch what happens if I draw a horizontal line through it.
Now, we have the fraction 42. The fraction itself changed but the amount shaded has not. That is because these two fractions, 21 and 42, are equivalent. So, we compare them with an equals sign:
21=42
Let's look at the fraction 31 now. If we multiply 31 by 1 nothing happens to it.
31⋅1=31
Now, let's multiply it by the fraction 55. The fraction 55 is the same as the number 1.
31⋅55=155
Therefore 31 and 155 are equivalent fractions. So,
31=155
Say we have the fraction 52 and we want to make it a fraction out of 20. What would be that fraction?
52=20
Well we know that 5 goes into 20, 4 times. So if we multiply the numerator and denominator we will get a fraction that's equivalent and out of 20.
52⋅44=208

Here's another video where he shows you how to go the other direction to find equivalent fractions.
Summary
Let's look at the fraction 2014 now. If we divide 2014 by 1 nothing happens to it.
2014÷1=2014
Now, let's divide it by the fraction 22. The fraction 22 is the same as the number 1.
2014÷22=107
Therefore, 2014 and 107 are equivalent fractions. So,
2014=107
Now, say we have the fraction 10055 and we want it out of 20. What would the new fraction look like?
10055=20
This question very much resembles a proportions problem.
To get from 100 to 20 we have to divide by 5. In terms of equations, we are trying to solve the equation x100=20, which has solution x=5.
So, if we divide both the numerator and denominator by 5, we will get an equivalent fraction that's out of 20.
10055÷55=2011

Let's try finding an equivalent fraction that's in lowest terms. A fraction is in lowest terms when the numerator and denominator don't have any common factors.
Let's look at the fraction 3012. Both the numerator and denominator have a factor of 2 so we immediately know this is not in lowest terms. Let's find the largest number that goes into both of these numbers. The answer is 6. If we divide both the numerator and denominator by this largest common factor, we get a fraction that's in lowest terms.
3012÷66=52
As you can see, 2 and 5 don't have any common factors. Therefore, it's in lowest terms. What we just did was reduce this fraction. We reduced 3012 to 52.
