First off, let's learn some definitions:

Whole numbers are positive numbers that don't have any fractions or decimals. For example, 867867 is a whole number (while 867.5867.5 or 86712867\frac{1}{2} are not). They can be summarized as the natural numbers plus 00.

Digits are the symbols that go into numbers: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,0, 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 99 are digits. 867867 is not a digit, but it is made up of three of them (8,6,8, 6, and 77).

Place is where a digit is in a number. In 867867, the number 88 is in the hundreds place, 66 is in the tens place, and 77 is in the ones place.

Place value is how much each digit is worth, based on what place it has in a number. You can find a digit's place value by multiplying it times its place. For example, the 88 in 867867 actually has a place value of 800800 (or 8×1008 \times 100), since it's in the hundreds place. Similarly, 77 in 867867 just has a place value of 77, since it's in the ones place (7×17 \times 1).

If you're familiar with decimals, we can also assign place values to decimals.

The number 987,654,321 with all their place values labeled. Starting from 1 and moving up: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions, ten millions, and hundred millions.

A guide to the places in a whole number. The pattern will continue forever, into the billions and beyond.

Using that logic, what is the place value of 66 in 867867?

Summary\large{\text{Summary}}

When writing numbers we use a place value system. Each place, or spot, in a number has its own meaning.

The number 123,456,789,012 where each place is labeled. Starting at the right most place it goes: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions, ten millions, hundred millions, billions, ten billions, and hundred billions.

Whole numbers are the set of natural numbers (counting numbers) and zero. 0,1,2,3,...0,1,2,3,...

Summary\large{\text{Summary}}

Place values of a number range from ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, etc. They keep going. They can also be expressed as 10010^0 (11 with 00 zeros on the end of it), 10110^1 (11 with 11 zero on the end of it), 10210^2 (11 with 22 zeroes on the end of it), etc. A Googol (pronounced like Google) is one of the largest place values we have. It's 1010010^{100} which is a 11 followed by 100100 zeroes.

It looks a little like this: 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000\begin{aligned} 100000000000000000000&\\ 00000000000000000000&\\ 00000000000000000000&\\ 00000000000000000000&\\ 00000000000000000000& \end{aligned}

Fun fact: It takes approximately 22 weeks to count to the number one million. Using this estimate it would take almost a googol years to count to a googol!
