Sound is made out of differences in pressure. The best way to illustrate this is with fire:

So what's going on here? Mythbusters has a good explanation of how a ruben's tube is built starting from 13 seconds in until about 44 seconds into the video.

So, we know that there's a speaker at one end of the tube, but what does a speaker actually do? We can figure that out by looking at a speaker move in slow motion.

So all that a speaker does is push air in and out very fast, forcing the air around the speaker to vibrate. In the particular case of the Ruben's tube, we can see how this would force the gas out of the tube, how the louder parts of the song (like whenever the bass kicks) force more gas out and cause the flame to flare up, while the quieter parts cause little change to the gas in the tube.

Type a concept, like “slope” or “photosynthesis”.
