In this discussion we'll learn how to find the distance between any two points in the plane given their coordinates. At the end, we'll even see how to find the distance between two points in spaaaaaace!
Let's start with a warmup:
What is the distance between the points and in the plane?
Now do the same for a vertical line:
What is the distance between the points and in the plane?
Notice that in the first problem, the distance is the positive difference of the -coordinates, and in the second, it is the positive difference of the -coordinates. Now we want a formula that works in general.
What is the distance between points and in the plane? (Hint: drop a perpendicular from to the -axis and use the Pythagorean Theorem.)
Let's try something slightly harder now.
What is the distance between and ? (Hint: drop two perpendiculars this time to form a right triangle.)
These examples show that in general, we can compute the distance between two points and by first computing their vertical and horizontal distances, and , and using the Pythagorean theorem with those as the legs!
Now, see if you can figure out the whole formula:
What is the formula for the distance between points and in the plane?
Bonus: The formula for the distance between two points and in three dimensions is Can you prove it?
