Cancerous Transformation Requires an Accumulation of Mutations
All cancers are thought to result from changes to the DNA that alter critical genes and change the behavior of the effected cells. Mutations happen very often during cell division. However, mutations are not always harmful. Some mutations are actually beneficial. Cancer results when a mutation is harmful and is not caught by the body's "proof-reading."
