Diagonals of Polygons

Before this, knowWhat Is a Convex Polygon?

Read · 1 min

A diagonal of a polygon is a segment that connects any two vertices of the polygon that are not consecutive.

So, a square has 2 diagonals, a triangle has 0, etc.

If a polygon has n sides, we find that it has n(n−3)2\frac{n(n-3)}{2} diagonals.

Proof: There are (n2)\binom{n}{2} segments connecting two vertices. Of these, n of them connect consecutive vertices, so we get (n2)−n=n(n−3)2\binom{n}{2}-n=\frac{n(n-3)}{2} diagonals.

Math as a puzzle

Many contest problems feel more like puzzles than homework. They are a good way to find out how much fun math can be. These are real problems from the AMC 8 and AMC 12, the national math competitions for middle and high school students, each with a worked solution on LIVE by Po-Shen Loh.
