What is the criteria for an equivalence relation? (We usually denote equivalence relations with or .)
Examples of equivalence relations include lines being parallel (often denoted by ), triangles being similar (denoted by ), and shapes being congruent (and denoted by ).
It's obvious that segment congruence is an equivalence relation. To be rigorous, let's prove it.
Proof. First we show transitivity. Let , , be three segments such that and . Then by definition of congruence, we see that and . Since equality is transitive, we conclude that and thus . Reflexivity and symmetry can be proven similarly by using the definition of congruence. This will be left as an exercise to the reader.
