What is the Mean and How Do I Find It?
We've covered other measures of central tendency, like median and mode. We know that median is the middle number, and mode is the frequent number in a set of numbers, and we can do word problems with this. In later lessons, we'll cover standard deviation (both the concept and how to calculate it), range, and statistical significance.
The arithmetic mean of a set of values is the same thing as the average.
We find the mean in two steps.
- Add up all of the values in the data set.
- Divide the sum by the total number of values.

(PS - We know your score is the 100%. Nice job!)

How many test scores are there in total?
What is the sum of all the test scores?
What is the mean math test score? (Round to the nearest whole number)
To find the mean, you find the sum of all the values, and divide it by the number of values.
So, is the mean of the above dataset!
Let's do another example.

What is the sum of all of the values in our dataset?
What is the mean amount spent at the grocery store by customers on Tuesday?
So, is the mean of the above dataset!
So, now you know mean! To summarize, we know that the middle number is the median and the most is the most common number in a list of numbers.
