The area of a figure is the amount of space inside it.

For example, the area inside a square with side length 1 is 12=11^2 = 1.

Now, there are a few handy formulas for areas of objects in the coordinate plane. One of them is Pick's formula.

Suppose we have a polygon with all the vertices on lattice points (points with integer coordinates).

If BB is the amount of points on the boundary, I is the amount of lattice points inside the figure, and A is the area, we have A=B2+I−1A=\frac{B}{2} + I -1

Example. Draw a square with coordinates (0,0)(0,0), (0,2)(0,2), (2,0)(2,0), and (2,2)(2,2).

Pick's formula tells us the area is 82+1−1=4\frac{8}{2}+1-1=4. This makes lots of sense.

What is the area of a quadrilateral with vertices (0,4)(0,4), (0,−4)(0, -4), (3,0)(3, 0), and (−3,0)(-3, 0)?

Math as a puzzle

Many contest problems feel more like puzzles than homework. They are a good way to find out how much fun math can be. These are real problems from the AMC 8, AMC 10, AMC 12 and AIME, the national math competitions for middle and high school students, each with a worked solution on LIVE by Po-Shen Loh.
