Difficulty Going Beyond Integer and Fractional Exponents

So now that we've seen how to do integer exponents and fractional exponents, the question comes up: How do we do exponents to other powers like irrational numbers?

What if we wanted to take 2π2^{\pi}?

Does this even make sense? Think about it for a bit, the answer isn't necessarily obvious.

The answer is we can make it make sense. However we have to think about exponents differently. Usually teachers will tell you that 2x2^x is xx copies of 22 all multiplied together. Which makes sense for x=3x=3. We take 33 twos, and get 23=2⋅2⋅2=82^3= 2\cdot 2\cdot 2=8. But it doesn't make so much sense for 2π2^{\pi}.

So we know we are going to have to think about exponents differently. Let's try thinking about properties of exponents.

Which of the following are properties of exponents?

What is the true meaning of a general real exponential BxB^x, for B>0B>0 a positive base and xx an arbitrary exponent, possibly irrational? This is a good question. One place to start reading is the other explanations here, or an old Math Stack Exchange question.

Type a concept, like “slope” or “photosynthesis”.
