Overview of Bacterial Structure

Bacteria occur in three main shapes: coccus, bacillus and spiral. Bacteria can further be categorized as gram negative or gram positive. This classification involves the cell wall of the bacteria. Ribosomes float within the cytoplasm of the bacteria cell. All bacteria have circular DNA that floats in the cytoplasm. Bacteria cells do not have a nucleus. Bacteria also have plasmids, which store additional genetic information.
