Adding and Subtracting Monomials of the Same Degree

Recall that the degree of a term is equal to the value of the exponent on its variable. As a refresher:

8 is 0 degree (x^0 = 1, so 8 is the same as 8x^0)

3x is 1st degree (x^1 = x)

-x^2 is 2nd degree

4y^3 is 3rd degree

What is the degree of the term 35x23^5x^2?

What are monomials and how to add/subtract them \\

Recall what we learned about monomials and polynomials. Here is a chart to help you:

Monomials: 3x, x, -2x, 4x^2

Binomials: x + 6, 2x^2 + 5x, -x^3 + 7x

Trinomials: x^2 + 3x - 2, 2x^3 - x + 5, 4x^3 + x^2 + 1

Polynomials (more than 3 terms): x^3 - 2x^2 + 3x - 1, -x^4 + 7x^2 + x + 6

Note: they can all be called "polynomials" because they are all expressions consisting of coefficients and variables.

Before we get to polynomials, let's first learn how to add and subtract monomials.

Recall the different parts of a monomial:

3x^2

3 is the coefficient

x is the variable

^2 is the exponent

We can only add or subtract monomials when they have the same variable and exponent. It might help to refresh combining like terms with exponents.

A: 2x

B: 3x^3

C: x

D: 1/2 x^3

(Video) Adding Monomials

by Lorain Digital Academy

This video by Lorain Digital Academy goes over what the different parts of a monomial are and how to add like terms.

Summary\large{\text{Summary}}

For two terms to be "like terms", they have to have the same variable and the same exponent. If you need to review these terms, check out Intro to Polynomials.

So, for example, we would consider 7x27x^2 and −x2-x^2 to be like terms since they both have the same variable (xx) and the same exponent (22). However, we would consider 7x27x^2 and −y2-y^2 to not be like terms since the variable is different.

Now, to add/subtract two monomials which are like terms, we simply add/subtract their coefficients. Going to the example above, we can simplify 7x2−x2=(7−1)x2=6x27x^2-x^2 = (7-1)x^2 = 6x^2 since 7x27x^2 and −x2-x^2 are like terms.

Type a concept, like “slope” or “photosynthesis”.
