Tsunamis are caused by and earthquake when the tectonic plates move below an ocean. This causes a disruption in the water and creates a wave. as the wave comes closer to land it gains in size. When the wave hits it is usually very tall and aggressive. The wave itself does not only do the damage, when it leaves it drags the things it destroyed back with it into the ocean.
