Define the following 2×22\times 2 matrix: A=[abcd]A = \left[ {\begin{array}{cc} a & b \\ c & d \\ \end{array} } \right] We want to find a 2×22\times 2 matrix A−1=[wxyz]A^{-1} = \left[ {\begin{array}{cc} w & x \\ y & z \\ \end{array} } \right] such that A−1A=AA−1=IA^{-1}A=AA^{-1}=I, where I=[1001]I = \left[ {\begin{array}{cc} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 \\ \end{array} } \right] II is known as the identity matrix, because for any matrix AA, AI=IA=AAI=IA=A A−1A^{-1} is called the inverse of AA.

Let us evaluate the product AA−1AA^{-1}: AA−1=[abcd][wxyz]AA^{-1} = \left[ {\begin{array}{cc} a & b \\ c & d \\ \end{array} } \right] \left[ {\begin{array}{cc} w & x \\ y & z \\ \end{array} } \right] AA−1=[aw+byax+bzcw+dycx+dz]AA^{-1} = \left[ {\begin{array}{cc} aw+by & ax+bz \\ cw+dy & cx+dz \\ \end{array} } \right] We obtain the following system of equations: aw+by=1aw+by=1 ax+bz=0ax+bz=0 cw+dy=0cw+dy=0 cx+dz=1cx+dz=1 It is quite tedious to solve this system of equations, but it is quite straightforward, since it is just 44 variables in 44 linear equations. Try to solve the system of equations yourself before moving on.

(Video) Inverse Matrix Using Gauss-Jordan and Row Reduction

by PatrickJMT

Here are some videos by patrickJMT showing you a different method of finding the inverse of a matrix. Note that for a 2×22\times2 matrix it's generally easier to use the determinant method. But for a 3×33\times3 or higher matrix, I find it simpler to use this method. Both will work so use whatever one you can do the quickest or easiest.

When is an n x n matrix inverse non-existent or undefined?

The inverse of a matrix A=[abcd]A = \begin{bmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{bmatrix} is A−1=1ad−bc[d−b−ca]A^{-1} = \frac{1}{ad-bc}\begin{bmatrix} d & -b \\ -c & a \end{bmatrix}

  • A square matrix (n x n) is not invertible if its determinant (\frac{1}{ad-bc})

  • A square matrix has an inverse that is undefined if its determinants denominator (ad−bcad-bc) is equal to 0 (divide by zero error).

Type a concept, like “slope” or “photosynthesis”.
