Special Right Triangles

As you may know, there exist two particularly notable right triangles: the right triangle with acute angles measuring 45∘45^{\circ} and 45∘45^{\circ} (commonly known as a 4545-4545-9090 triangle for obvious reasons) and the right triangle with acute angles measuring 30∘30^{\circ} and 60∘60^{\circ} (commonly known as a 3030-6060-9090 triangle for similarly obvious reasons).

A 4545-4545-9090 triangle is always isosceles: two of its angles are congruent, so the sides opposite those angles are congruent as well.

If we call the length of these sides (the legs of the triangle) xx, what is the length of the hypotenuse of such a triangle?

Put ideas together

Contest problems often need this idea together with one or two others. That is where understanding goes deeper than memory. These are real problems from the AMC 10, AMC 12 and AIME, the national math competitions for middle and high school students, each with a worked solution on LIVE by Po-Shen Loh.
