A Nice Little Area Ratio Lemma
Observe the high quality diagram above. We see that △AEB and △BEC share the same height (that height being the same height of △ABC). Let the height be h. If [AEB] denotes the area of △AEB then
[BEC][AEB]=AC∗2hAE∗2h=ACAE. Thus [AEB]:[BEC]=AE:AC
Just like △AEB and △EBC share a common height the same is true for △AED and △EDC. And what's even more convenient is the fact that if we call the common height between △AED and △EDCh1 we get that
[EDC][AED]=EC∗2h1AE∗2h1=ECAE=[BEC][ABE]!
Here's a quick algebra fact: If ba=dc then ba=dc=b+da+c=b−da−c.
From [BEC][AEB]=[EDC][AED]=[BEC]−[EDC][AEB]−[AED]=[BDC][BDA]=ECAE we obtain that
[ADB]:[BDC]=AE:EC which is slightly less trivial than the other ratios stated above.
