Overview of Endomembrane System

The endomembrane system includes a variety of organelles and cell membranes that work together to perform different functions, such as secreting proteins.

The nuclear envelope, endoplasmic reticulum, plasma membrane, golgi apparatus, lysosome, and vacuole are all examples of structures that contribute to the endomembrane system.

All eukaryote cells have a functionally interrelated membrane system known as the endomembrane system. The endomembrane system consists of the nuclear envelope, Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi Apparatus, vesicles and other organelles derived from them and the plasma membrane.

The endomembrane system functions together in protein synthesis, protein modification, protein sorting and protein transport. More information on the individual roles of each of the members of the endomembrane system can be found by clicking through the organelles in the topic map.
