Take cross-sections of the prism parallel to the two bases.

By the definition of a prism, every cross-section has the same area AA.

Call the height of the prism hh. This is the distance between the planes of the bases.

The common notions of area in 2-D may be generalized to volume in 3-D.

Thus, the volume of a prism VV is the product of the area of the base and the height.

This is expressed concisely as V=AhV=Ah.

These problems have no steps to copy. You have to understand the idea well enough to bend it to a new purpose. These are real problems from the AMC 8, AMC 12 and AIME, the national math competitions for middle and high school students, each with a worked solution on LIVE by Po-Shen Loh.

Volume of a prism: It's easy multiplication of three numbers unless you're bad at two digit multiplication like I am. So,

and segment b e is equal to 4 cm, and so is segment e f. Now, the length of a b is 8 cm. To find the volume, we're going to multiply 4 by 4, then by 8. The formula for finding the volume of a rectangular and triangular prism is base times height times length.

There are many different formulas to find the volumes of different solids, so base times height times length might not always work...

A prism is like the triangular one below. Sides AFAF, ECEC and DBDB are the same length, and so are sides FEFE and ACAC, EDED and CBCB, and FDFD and ABAB. The volume of this prism is the area of triangle △ACB\bigtriangleup ACB multiplied by the length of side FAFA.

There are also other kinds of prisms, such as rectangular prisms, or other kinds of polygon prisms. For those kinds of prisms, we also multiply the area of one of the ends by the width.

Type a concept, like “slope” or “photosynthesis”.
