If a chord ABAB "intercepts" an (inscribed) angle ∠ACB\angle{ACB} of measure θ\theta, then minor arc AB^=min⁡(2θ,2π−2θ)\widehat{AB} = \min(2\theta,2\pi-2\theta) (by this in the "normal chord case" and this in the "tangent case"), so AB/2R=sin⁡(AB^/2)=sin⁡θ\frac{AB/2}{R} = \sin(\widehat{AB}/2) = \sin\theta.

In other words, AB=2Rsin⁡θAB = 2R\sin\theta.

So, you can find chord length from the central, inscribed, or circumscribed angle. You can also go in reverse from the angle to the chord length. Either way, this angle-chord relationship can be used to prove the extended law of sines.

Worth the struggle

Twenty minutes on one hard problem can teach more than ten easy exercises. These problems are worth staying with. These are real problems from the AMC 8, AMC 12 and AIME, the national math competitions for middle and high school students, each with a worked solution on LIVE by Po-Shen Loh.

Type a concept, like “slope” or “photosynthesis”.
