Matter is defined as anything occupying space and having mass. It is the material of the universe. While it may seem simple since everything around us is composed of matter, it is quite complex and has many levels of organization.

Some substances are not considered matter because they have no mass. These include photons, light, and sound.

Traditionally, matter exists in three states: solid, liquid, and gas. Some textbooks also include plasma as a fourth state of matter. When a substance's phase changes, so does the arrangement and movement of particles, as well as its volume and shape.

A solid has a fixed volume and shape. Its atoms are densely packed and held firmly in place.

A liquid has a fixed volume, but not a fixed shape - it assumes the shape of the container. Its atoms are less densely packed.

A gas has no fixed volume or shape - it assumes both the volume and the shape of the container. Its atoms fly in all directions at great speeds.

A plasma is an ionized gas at a very high temperature. The characteristics of plasmas are significantly different from those of ordinary gases, so that plasmas are sometimes considered a distinct state of matter.

Everything that takes up space and has mass is matter. Whether solid, liquid, gas, (or plasma), if you can see or interact with it, chances are, it's matter.

All matter shares a few characteristics. First of all, all matter has mass. This means that there is always a certain amount of "stuff" that can interact with gravity and other forces. Additionally, all matter takes up space, or in other words, has a volume. Finally, all matter is made out of atoms. Chemists study the ways these atoms interact with each other to form specific substances and states of matter.

What is matter?
- must have mass and volume
-> even air, which we cannot see, has some mass and takes up space, so it is matter.

picture of cat = matter
picture of shoes = matter
picture of air = matter

all of these take up space

(Video) Classifying Matter

by Ben's Chem Videos

In this video, Ben tells you what matter is and how it can be described. First, he breaks it down by composition. Then, he discusses phases (or states) of matter. Finally, he teaches about physical changes and chemical changes. At the end, you'll have a chance to test what you know with some practice problems.

Type a concept, like “slope” or “photosynthesis”.
